The Cannes Film Festival is back – and the attendees appear to be making up for lost time when it comes to red-carpet style. This includes supermodel Bella Hadid, who made an appearance at the opening ceremony and premiere of Annette last night, where she pulled off one of her most glamorous appearances to date, looking into the fashion archives for her beautiful gown.

Hadid chose a black-and-white dress with a dramatic silhouette and train for her first event of the festival, which actually came from Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 2002 collection. It was first seen on Naomi Campbell, who wore it on the catwalk during the collection reveal.

The dress featured a structured white bodice with a black tulle strap detail at the top of the dress, which then continued down into a long train that was perfect for swishing around in on the Croisette.

This is not Hadid’s first time wearing vintage at Cannes. The model wore a memorable red gown by Roberto Cavalli to the 2019 film festival, which she and her stylist had found in the archives.

And, she is not alone – in fact, celebrities have been turning to vintage gowns more and more to make dramatic entrances on the red carpet, because, in many ways, it allows them to make more of an impact.

“The rise of vintage on the red carpet can be attributed to more and more celebrities looking to have a truly one-of-a-kind moment,” Seth Weisser, the co-founder and CEO of NYC’s vintage store What Goes Around Comes Around, told us. “Vintage styles are often quite rare because they have been discontinued and that presents an incredible opportunity for celebrities to express their individual style.”

This was certainly the case for Hadid, who was able to embrace her signature high-octane look in the spectacular gown.
